Barack Obama is President Elect of the United States. It’s probably not a surprise, but if you’d suggested a couple of years ago that a one term Senator without executive experience would be President people would perhaps have been unconvinced, that’s before adding in a messy Primary campaign and issues of race and class.
Why is Barack Obama going to be president, and why are so many people excited about it? The reason seems to lie in his ability to motivate people, to excite them, to inspire belief and confidence and to make change sound exciting.
What he’s offering people is a vision for the future, with values people feel they can really get behind. That has encouraged previously unengaged people to get out and vote, even to register to vote for the first time.
What can business leaders (or people who want to become leaders) learn from this? Creating enthusiasm and building commitment takes an inspiring vision, values and goals framework.
