The Power Of Positive Expectation?

Andy Murray put in an astounding performance yesterday, coming back from two sets down to win his way through to the quarter finals at Wimbledon. I have to admit, I didn't see it as I'd switched off after catching the 2-0 scoreline.

The Centre Court crowd however did not switch off and provided roars of approval for Andy, cheering him on and hoping against all the odds. The crowd believed in Andy, and to some degree he credits them with the victory. Their belief inspired his own self belief (not something he's generally short of, but he was in a tight spot).

Some of the participants on training courses do lack the self belief to demonstrate all of their competencies in the workplace, the boost of confidence they get from attending a great training course, with a good mix of people can help turn their performance around almost as much as the new skills they learn.

Managers have a big role to play in boosting that confidence and self belief back in the workplace, but many don't know how to coach in confidence. It's an important skill for any professional manager to learn if they want to boost the performance and motivation of their teram.
